Shameless Self Promotion: a POV (1)

This will be (mildly) interesting if you need to build a business network and/or drive relationships and revenue. I posit that you have to talk about yourself. Out loud. On the internet. Repeatedly. It might not feel dignified, but it's necessary.

Short attention spans

It doesn’t matter if you saved a client millions or cracked the most baffling industry puzzle. If you’re not reminding people you exist, you may as well not. Extreme example but you get the point.

Trust can be built on repetition Ever wondered why terrible adverts get stuck in your head? The same principle applies here: the more people see you share sharp insights or clever takes, the more they think, “Ah, they’re good at this!” Keep showing up, and you’ll start to stick.

Networking without the canapés Posting is basically networking for introverts. No awkward small talk, no dubious wine, just your words doing the legwork. It works while you sleep. (Caveat: if you’re planning an event with food and booze please carry on and do invite me - i love them)

Your expertise isn’t self-aware Your hard-won knowledge isn’t going to leap out and introduce itself. Every post is a chance to remind people why you’re worth paying attention to. (paying being the operative word)

How to promote yourself without the ick

Be useful, but not a bore Share tips, observations, or stories that people can actually use. If you’re worried it sounds too obvious, don’t —sometimes the basics are what people need most.

Sprinkle in personality But only if you have some to spare. Humour would also be fabulous - we need more LOLs on LinkedIn.

Consistency over perfection Obsessing over the perfect post is the quickest way to ensure it never sees the light of day. Hit publish, warts and all. If it flops, the algorithm will bury it for you.

Invite debate (politely) Ask questions or share a hot take. Nothing gets engagement quite like a spirited discussion—just don’t pick fights online, it’s cowardly and unnecessary.

The upshot: it’s shameless, but it works

Self-promotion isn’t going to feel entirely natural for lots of us - but neither is staying invisible while others snap up all the opportunities. So, here’s your nudge. Post the thing. Share the insight. Drop the humble and keep the brag. Your future clients are out there, and they won’t find you if you’re hiding behind a modesty rock. Now go on, publish. You’ve earned it.
